york festival of ideas

An event run across a variety of media platforms that will initiate a conversation on the differences and affinities between the kinds of work involved in arts-based practice and wage labour. Working on the premise that the kind of reflexive, critical thinking usually associated with artistic practice is in fact intrinsic to the lived experience of wage labour. The event will seek to develop the productive tensions that arise from the different ways artists and non-artists experience, think, and talk about how they work, to explore how far the seeming collapse of this very distinction can be said to condition much contemporary artistic practice, and to consider how art and labour look at and converse with one another from inside what John Roberts has called the 'expanded field' of social, economic, and technological forces determining both. The event will draw on a collective response from individuals working in a variety of sectors and disciplines as the basis for further discussion, and aims to provide a forum for thinking about our relation to what we do when we work and - perhaps more interestingly - when we don't.
